Artists Statement

My paintings are rooted in landscape. They are not a snap shot or a single moment in time captured in documentary fashion, but represent more the passing of time. They seek to convey the emotion of being in landscape. Recalling atmospheric encounters in changing light and weather, seasons and places. The works are based on memories and observations past and present. This frame of reference as a starting point promotes a freedom from small detailed restraint, promoting a more fluid gestural freedom of expression. No one viewpoint makes a perfect landscape. Seeking the perfect place, time and vista is futile. There will always be a lamppost casting pollutant artificial light, a power line, aircraft vapour trail or some other blight of man made intervention to ruin the view. Their for my paintings are more a collection of viewpoints edited from memory during say a walk or from a vehicle window. Each view point may be moments apart or days apart. One painting may be my emotional response to several days experience of a place or a journey.

After 20 years as a graphic artist I began studying for a BA in fine art. At around this time I became interested in sculpture, especially ceramic. Strong forms have developed inspired by the perfection of the human figure. Sensitively fired using Ancient Japanese Raku, Smoke or Crystalline techniques.
